Fishing enthusiasts seeking the best states for their next angling adventure should look no further than Alaska, which has been ranked as the top destination for fishing, according to a recent study by the fishing industry company FishingBooker. The study evaluates fishing opportunities across all 50 states based on various criteria, showcasing Alaska’s exceptional offerings.

Alaska boasts the longest coastline of any U.S. state, stretching nearly 33,900 miles, alongside over 94,000 square miles of freshwater. This combination creates a prime environment for fishing, making it a popular choice among both locals and visitors. Nearly 60% of Alaskans hold a fishing license, underscoring the popularity of the sport. As noted by FishingBooker, the state is a “salmon mecca,” offering the chance to catch all five species of Pacific salmon, alongside barndoor halibut and various rockfish.

Florida and Delaware Round Out the Top Three

Following Alaska, Florida ranks second in the study, recognized for its outstanding saltwater fishing opportunities. With over 8,400 miles of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, Florida provides access to a diverse range of game fish. FishingBooker describes the state as synonymous with “supreme saltwater fishing,” highlighting the abundance of fish in its clear waters.

Delaware takes the third spot, offering an equal mix of freshwater and saltwater fishing. Anglers can cast their lines in various inland waters, the productive Delaware Bay, or venture into the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. Freshwater catches include bass, crappie, and muskellunge, while popular saltwater species encompass striped bass, flounder, and black seabass.

The study also places Michigan at fourth, thanks to its access to four of the five Great Lakes, establishing it as the nation’s epicenter for freshwater fishing. Over 40% of Michigan is covered in water, which spans more than 40,000 square miles. Common catches in Michigan include walleye, trout, and salmon.

In a tie for fifth place, Wisconsin and Minnesota showcase their own impressive fishing landscapes. Wisconsin features access to both Lake Superior and Lake Michigan, along with numerous lakes and streams. Popular catches include coho salmon and rainbow trout, with winter ice fishing for crappie and lake trout adding to the excitement.

Minnesota, known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes,” is celebrated for its muskellunge and walleye fishing, as well as being a top ice fishing destination.

Changes in Rankings and Observations

This marks the third consecutive year that FishingBooker has conducted its comprehensive analysis of fishing quality across the United States. Notably, New Jersey has fallen from 21st place in 2024 to 28th this year. Despite its reputation for excellent fishing, particularly along the Atlantic Coast, the state has faced challenges regarding affordability and fishing infrastructure.

Vukan Simic, the CEO of FishingBooker, commented on New Jersey’s decline, stating, “There’s no question that New Jersey offers some phenomenal angling, especially along the Atlantic Coast. But with lower scores in affordability and fishing infrastructure, the data shows that the state isn’t competing as well as it used to.” The findings reveal that 15 of the 25 states with the lowest rankings are landlocked, contrasting with just six landlocked states among the top 25.

FishingBooker’s research not only highlights the best states for fishing but also serves as a resource for anglers looking to explore new waters. The study emphasizes the significance of fishing as a cherished pastime, fostering connections between communities and the great outdoors.
