The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is set to distribute nearly 700,000 oral rabies vaccines across North Georgia, including metro Atlanta, in response to a recent uptick in rabies cases. The airdrop operations will commence on October 24, 2023, and continue through October 28, 2023. Helicopters and airplanes will be employed to deliver the vaccines, particularly targeting raccoons, which are known carriers of the rabies virus.

In addition to Georgia, the vaccine drop will extend to several other states, including Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia, according to a report by Newsweek. The vaccines, known as RABORAL V-RG, are specifically designed for wildlife consumption; they are coated in fishmeal and packaged in plastic sachets. Residents are urged to avoid handling the baits to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Rabies is a viral disease that affects the nervous system and is commonly transmitted by wild animals such as raccoons, bats, skunks, and foxes. In 2022, raccoons were responsible for the majority of rabies cases reported in Alabama, with 25 cases, followed by 65 cases in Georgia and 100 cases in North Carolina. In Tennessee, skunks were more frequently identified as rabies carriers.

To monitor the distribution of vaccines in real time, the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) provides an interactive website. Officials emphasize the importance of keeping pet vaccinations current and advise the public to maintain a safe distance from wild animals to help prevent the spread of rabies.

The proactive measures taken by the USDA aim to mitigate the rising threat of rabies in affected areas. As urban wildlife increasingly interacts with human populations, the distribution of these vaccines is crucial for public health and safety.
