Identifying systemic mastocytosis at an early stage can significantly improve patient outcomes. This rare disease often first presents as skin abnormalities, emphasizing the need for clinicians to recognize when a rash indicates a more serious condition. During the 2025 Society of Dermatology Physician Associates (SDPA) Fall Conference, Dr. Hussein Abbas, an assistant professor at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, addressed this critical issue in a session titled “When a Rash Is More than Skin Deep: Systemic Mastocytosis Essentials.”

Dr. Abbas discussed the challenges healthcare professionals face when diagnosing such a rare condition. “Systemic mastocytosis is a very rare disease, but it’s also significant because it can create a substantial symptom burden for patients,” he explained in an interview with HCPLive. “In some cases, it can impact longevity and quality of life.”

Understanding the diagnostic pathways and clinical clues is essential for effective management. Dr. Abbas emphasized the importance of collaboration with hematology and oncology specialists for comprehensive patient care. “One of the main takeaways is that systemic mastocytosis is under-recognized, and working together is crucial,” he noted.

Patients often first consult dermatologists or allergists due to initial symptoms like skin rashes or allergic reactions. Dr. Abbas highlighted the necessity of recognizing these symptoms as indicative of systemic mastocytosis, which requires specific diagnostic workups, including blood tests for enzymes such as tryptase.

In his session, Dr. Abbas categorized the cutaneous manifestations of mastocytosis into three primary groups, one of which includes maculopapular cutaneous mastocytosis (MPCM). “MPCM presents as brown or reddish lesions on the skin,” he explained. “These lesions can have a uniform shape and, when stimulated, may cause a noticeable skin reaction.”

For healthcare professionals seeking further insights on identifying systemic mastocytosis, a full video of Dr. Abbas’s presentation is available for viewing. The information shared during this session aims to enhance awareness and improve diagnostic practices among clinicians.

Dr. Abbas confirmed that he had no relevant financial disclosures. The insights provided during the conference are crucial for advancing understanding and management of this complex disease, ultimately benefiting patient care.
