Tangipahoa Schools Enhance Security Measures for Student Safety
In an effort to bolster campus safety, the Tangi School System in Tangipahoa Parish has implemented comprehensive security measures aimed at protecting students and staff. Superintendent Melissa Stilley emphasized that ensuring safety is the district’s highest priority, stating, “The safety of our students and staff is our absolute highest priority.” This commitment encompasses not just policy but a tangible effort to safeguard the community.
The district has adopted a strategic, multi-layered approach that combines physical security enhancements, trained personnel, and advanced technology. Recently, the addition of perimeter fencing and access gates has tightened control over who can enter school campuses. All middle and high schools are now equipped with metal detectors and security wands to screen students upon entry, enhancing the overall security environment.
The initiative also includes the use of a K9 detection team, which regularly conducts searches at various schools to detect drugs and weapons. Recently, K9 handlers Chris Gideon and Marshal Dean visited Sumner High School for a scheduled sweep. Stilley noted that the selection of schools for searches is determined by a random computer program, ensuring that all campuses are included in the rotation. This year, several middle schools have opted to participate, expanding the program’s reach.
During these searches, K9s thoroughly inspect each area of the campus, including classrooms and parking lots. If a dog shows interest in a specific spot, the handlers alert nearby school administrators to investigate further. Assistant Superintendent Ron Genco remarked, “This is just one step of many steps that we’re doing to ensure safety in our schools.” He reported that the recent sweep at Sumner High School found no threats, reflecting positively on the community’s efforts.
Gideon, who has extensive experience in school security, praised the operations at Tangipahoa Parish schools. He remarked, “If you only look on Facebook, you think that these schools are war zones, and they’re not. They’re well-run, professionally operated schools.” His comments highlighted the dedication of school staff and law enforcement in maintaining a safe learning environment.
Sheriff Gerald Sticker reinforced the importance of security measures, noting that school resource officers and security guards are stationed at every high school and at various middle schools. He stated, “The TPSO has dedicated people as well as prevention and preparedness tools, protocols, and strategies toward this effort.” The Sheriff’s Office is prepared to adapt to evolving security needs within the school system.
In addition to personnel, the district has made significant updates to security infrastructure. Required ID badges for students and staff help ensure that only authorized individuals are present on school property. Exterior doors remain locked to prevent unauthorized entry, while access gates with security cameras monitor visitors during the school day. Each school also has a crisis plan and conducts mandatory safety drills annually, as mandated by state law.
For community engagement, the Tangipahoa Parish School System encourages vigilance among residents. The Crime Stoppers P3 Tips app allows for anonymous reporting of potential threats or suspicious activity. Concerns reported are investigated promptly by law enforcement and school officials.
At its core, the initiative reflects the district’s commitment to maintaining a safe educational environment. Stilley concluded, “We can provide every student with a high-quality education and a pathway to success.” This proactive stance on campus safety highlights the importance of collaboration between school officials, law enforcement, and the community in safeguarding the future of students in Tangipahoa Parish.
