Third-grader Zaevion Howell, who is part of the moderate cognitively impaired class, was delighted to ride with his classmates on a recent trip to Post Family Farms in Hudsonville. As he boarded the bus, which features a wheelchair ramp and designated locking spots for wheelchairs, Zaevion waved and smiled, embodying the excitement of the day.

The bus is one of four new vehicles purchased by Wyoming Public Schools in spring 2023. Previously, students who required wheelchairs were transported separately during field trips, a practice that isolated them from their peers. Joe Steffes, the district’s safety, security, and transportation director, emphasized the significance of this change. “Our children in wheelchairs can actually go on field trips with their classmates in the same bus,” he stated. “It’s really, really cool.”

The introduction of this bus is more than just a logistical improvement; it represents a commitment to inclusion and equity within the school community. Teacher Mary Courville, who guides Zaevion’s class, highlighted the positive impact of having accessible transportation. “I think it’s so great that our district does such a great job with inclusion and equity,” she noted. “Making a bus system accessible for all the students lets scholars function with integrity and be with their peers, who also want them to be included.”

The journey to the pumpkin patch not only provided an enjoyable outing for the students but also created an atmosphere of camaraderie and support.
