Mighty Oaks Early Learning Center Opens New Location in Rochester
Mighty Oaks Early Learning Center has officially opened its new location in the former Pinewood Elementary building, marking a significant transition for early childhood education in Rochester. The relocation aims to increase access to quality early learning opportunities for families, particularly those with low incomes.
During a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on October 10, 2023, leaders from the school, the Rochester Public Schools district, and local government gathered to celebrate this new chapter. Kent Pekel, Superintendent of Rochester Public Schools, emphasized the importance of expanding early childhood education, stating, “This is an incredible investment in our community. We want to go further with expanding early childhood offerings, but this is a very substantive step forward.”
The transition to the newly designated Mighty Oaks Early Learning Center comes after a long process that involved relocating from its previous site on Marion Road. The decision to move was announced last year, coinciding with the closure of Pinewood Elementary, which had served generations of students. This change represents both an end and a beginning for the community, as Pinewood Elementary has merged with Longfellow Elementary in a newly rebuilt facility.
Facility Enhancements and Community Impact
Mighty Oaks Early Learning Center caters to children aged three to five, offering a variety of programs, including half-day and full-day classes, as well as general education and special needs programming. The new location has undergone substantial modifications to better accommodate young learners.
Director of Early Learning for Rochester Public Schools, Erica Schumacher, highlighted the importance of these adjustments. “This was not possible without people who were willing to let early childhood providers say, ‘we need to make the toilets lower – we need to lower everything,’” she said. The building features shorter amenities tailored for young children, an expanded parking lot, and a new playground situated at the rear.
The relocation has already shown positive results, with enrollment numbers rising. “Enrollment is already up because this is located in a place where we know there are young families with young children,” Pekel noted. The new site not only offers a larger space but also places the school closer to the families seeking early education options, enhancing accessibility.
The district plans to sell the previous building, further solidifying the commitment to investing in early childhood education. The move signifies a proactive approach to addressing the needs of young families in the area, ensuring that children have access to essential learning resources in their formative years.
As Mighty Oaks begins its journey in its new home, the community looks forward to the positive impact it will have on early childhood education in Rochester. With the new facilities and a focus on inclusivity, the school is poised to thrive in its mission of nurturing young minds.
