Kids Embrace the ‘6-7’ Meme, Disrupting Classrooms Nationwide
A new meme has taken hold in schools across the United States, with students enthusiastically shouting “6-7,” pronounced “six-seveeeeen.” This phrase has become a viral sensation among children, echoing through classrooms and hallways, and sparking both amusement and frustration among educators. The phenomenon, which has been described as akin to a viral “plague,” reflects a deeper social dynamic among Generation Alpha, who find camaraderie in this nonsensical phrase.
Gabe Dannenbring, a seventh-grade science teacher in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, has observed this trend firsthand. “You can’t say any iteration of the numbers 6 or 7 without having at least 15 kids yell, ‘6-7!’” he remarked. The phrase has no defined meaning but serves as a bonding mechanism for students, creating a shared language that fosters a sense of belonging within their peer groups.
Origins and Cultural Significance of ‘6-7’
The origins of “6-7” can be traced to various sources, including a viral song titled “Doot Doot (6 7)” by Philadelphia rapper Skrilla. In the song, the phrase appears in a catchy chorus, contributing to its spread on social media platforms. Linguist and social scientist Taylor Jones explained that the phrase’s appeal lies in its ambiguity. “It becomes a language game to them that, it would seem, only folks in their group know how to play,” he noted.
The phrase gained traction in December 2024, coinciding with a viral video featuring high school basketball player Taylen Kinney. In the clip, Kinney rates a drink with the phrase, showcasing a gesture that has since become associated with “6-7.” This connection further solidified its status within youth culture, especially among sports fans. The phrase appears regularly in highlight reels, such as those involving LaMelo Ball of the Charlotte Hornets, who stands at 6 feet, 7 inches.
Despite its nonsensical nature, “6-7” functions as a social identifier. It acts as a shibboleth, marking those who understand and use the phrase as part of an “in” group. Gail Fairhurst, a professor at the University of Cincinnati, emphasized the unifying force of such language. She stated, “Language is a way for people to form community…even if it’s a nonsense term.”
The Classroom Response and Future of ‘6-7’
Teachers are navigating the challenges posed by this viral phrase. Many, like Dannenbring, have adopted strategies to manage its disruptive potential. Dannenbring noted that his current record for hearing “6-7” in a single day is 75 times. In response, he sometimes plays along, using the phrase incorrectly to diffuse the situation. “If you acknowledge it, then it gets over with in about 15 seconds,” he explained.
Conversely, some educators are actively integrating “6-7” into their lesson plans. A choir teacher in Michigan has successfully incorporated it into warm-up exercises, blending it with other trending phrases to keep students engaged. This approach highlights the ongoing tension between maintaining classroom decorum and recognizing the cultural significance of student expressions.
Despite its popularity, experts suggest that “6-7” may eventually fade as youth culture evolves. Jones noted that the backlash from adults could inadvertently prolong its life. “The fact that you can get a big reaction from somebody for something just totally meaningless—that might give it longer longevity than it might otherwise have,” he said.
As the phrase continues to circulate, it illustrates the playful nature of youth communication. Dannenbring pointed out that concerns about the impact of such expressions on literacy or critical thinking are often overblown. “This is not anywhere near being a new phenomenon,” he stated, emphasizing that every generation develops its own slang.
While “6-7” may eventually join the ranks of other fleeting internet memes, its current status as a shared joke highlights the importance of language in youth culture. Whether it is a benign expression of community or a momentary trend, “6-7” provides a snapshot of how children connect in an ever-evolving digital landscape.
