A former student of Benjamin Speed has publicly endorsed him for a position on the Bangor School Committee. In a letter, Simon French, who studied under Speed for three years at Hancock County Technical Center, emphasized the educator’s dedication and impactful teaching methods. French attributes much of his professional success to Speed’s guidance during his high school years.

In his letter, French described Speed as one of the most devoted educators he has encountered. He noted that Speed has a unique ability to make learning enjoyable, creating an environment where creativity flourishes. French highlighted how every student felt acknowledged and valued in Speed’s classroom, regardless of their abilities.

“His classroom was a place where creativity thrived,” French stated. “He took the time to understand each of us individually.” This personalized approach left a lasting impression on French, who now serves as the director of creative for Maine Athletics and a photographer for Waterfront Concerts. He expressed that he continues to apply the concepts learned from Speed in his current work.

French believes that with Speed on the school committee, Bangor’s education system would benefit significantly. He underscored Speed’s commitment to investing in students and empowering teachers, stating, “I am confident he would use those values to improve the quality of education for the youth of Bangor.”

The letter serves as a testament to Speed’s influence on his students and his potential contributions to the school committee. French’s endorsement comes as the election approaches, with letters and columns related to the November 4 election being accepted until October 29. Only a limited number of submissions will be published.

As Bangor residents consider candidates for the school committee, endorsements like French’s may play a crucial role in shaping public perception of those vying for educational leadership.
